New songs from Guillermo Sexo and Joshua Lanes!!

While there is definitely some conflicted interest here since As Built is promoting these records, the songs slay. Please download them and share with everyone. Bands have given permission to put these up so no worries!

Joshua Lanes - "The Dance Thunder" - The Dance Thunder EP

This EP is sonically very diverse and this is by far the catchiest song off it. Like superchunk, archers of loaf and guided by voices, this song is or you

Guillermo Sexo - "Magic Lanterns" - Magic Lanterns

This song has all the components of what I look for in a good rock song, interesting and varied guitar parts, tempo changes, pleasant melodies, and vocal and instrument interplay. This song will get any Debbie downer in better spirits. If this had come out between 1988- 1991, this song would be classic. Did I mention that there is only one guitarist in the band?

Guillermo Sexo - "Telegrams" - Magic Lanterns

mmm intertwined male and female vocals with a Death from Above 1979 groove. Yes please.

What I have been listening to lately and what you should be as well.

Flying Lotus - Los Angeles (Warp)(2008)
No explanation needed of how awesome this entire album is.

Gaslamp Killer - Shit on Your Grave" (Obey) (2008)
This cat plays the drums heard of this recording. This is taking what Dilla did and Madlib still does to another plane

Sarlota Zalatany - "ST" (1973)
heavy as brick female fronted turkish psych.

Zomby - "Strange Fruit/ Liquid Dancehall" (2008)
Solid solid tracks from one of the more unique dubsteppers.

Colosseum - "Daughter of Time" (1970)
Captivating, heavy prog rock with a strong influence in jazz. The gutsy, rough and bluesy only add to this mammoth album. Serious rotation here.

South Dakota, fuck off!

SOUTH DAKOTA.. Flattest place on earth. Yes Donovan Sharp and Kid Kaleidoscope are on Epic. We have been traveling since the 5th and currently cleaning up after hard night in the Badlands. And boy, did the Badlands live up to their name. Try steady 40 MPH winds with gusts strong enough to capsize our tent. When that happens, and mud is covering every inch of ones body...its time to get the fuck out. To top it all off throw in wild bison, rattlesnakes, some hail, snow and 20 degree bitter cold...and that wind, it's painful, relentless. Although I must admit that the Badlands were absolutely one of the most otherworldly places I've ever been. Yes blizzard like conditions in May is wholly alien to my New England ideal of popping tree buds and sticky air, temperatures pushing 80. All I can say is that, the Pacific sunshine cannot come fast enough.

Now on to music, so I found this song off www.missingtoof.com The song is by a 2 Unlimted and called
Jump for Joy. If this doesn't get you off your feet and jumping around like a giddy school kid in a roller rink in 94, then your fucked.

If any of you cats live in Washington, Oregon, Cali, or Denver, please email me at asbuiltmrod@gmail.com and tell me whats up, where to go, where the parties at. HOLLA.

Badlands photo update tomorrow.

You're losing your Vitamic C.

So anyhow...

Here's some tunes that have been rubbing my belly as of late:

I really never listened to Erykah Badu before this album; but now I wonder why I haven't. This is a pretty stark album. The production is here is what really kills it, Madlib, 9th Wonder and Sa-Ra is a dream team in my book.

There's a second part of this album coming out later this year...can't wait.

Here's a link to her single (sorry can't embed)

It's a contrast from the rest of the album, but it's a damn good pop song.

Clipse really ought to be the Kings of the rap world. Hell Hath No Fury is an absolute beast of an album and stuck with me like no other rap album in the past 5 years. This was released awhile ago and its definitely worth the download.

The standout here is the self-reflexive "Show You How to Hustle".

You can buy it here

P.S. See these guys live

I realy liked the Cool Kids song 'Black Mags' and Kid Cudi's is another part of the Fool's Gold family. Day 'N' Nite is the song i'm on about here. It's a solid late night/early morning stoner anthem. The production on this is fucking sublime.

That's all for now, but I'll be back tomorrow

I promise, not 3 months from now, tomorrow.

WELCOME, WIE GEHTS!!

Welcome to It's a Tropical Life, a brand new undertaking of massive stupidiousness of the highest of levels. I'm your host, Kid Kaleidoscope and my partner in crime Donovan Sharp'll be around these parts in a bit. Big things planned starting with a look back at '07 and then progressing towards legendary feats of bloggery...big things indeed. But lets just start with a funny little video which pretty much sums up my more recent feelings for a certain scene.

BAN THE WOBBLE!!

see you back here soon...
